I am pleased to announce that Aric Curtiss is our new Loss Prevention
Specialist. Aric brings with him significant experience in the development
of loss control and early-return-to-work programs.

Most recently, he was the Loss Prevention/Risk Manager for ShopKo here in
Helena and was instrumental in establishing a loss control and
early-return-to-work program that saved his facitily hundreds of thousands
of dollars annually. His background includes familiarity with security
issues, personal protective equipment, OSHA standards, ADA, and professional
development/training.

Though new to the public sector, I am confident that Aric has the necessary
skills to assist each of you with your safety and loss control needs.
Please join me in welcoming Aric to state government. He can be reached
after Monday at ext. 3486.

On another note, it has been some time since we have had our meetings. That
will change in August. Stay tuned for details on our next meeting and have a
great summer.

Coordinators,

By now, all of you have received several messages about the Loss Prevention
(Safety) Coordinator's meetings. Please recognize that there are 39 members
of this group, called an 3-group, and named rmtd asc@egroups.com and that
whenever you respond to a message from one member of the group, your
response goes to all 39 members of the group.

In order to better manage information and eliminate unnecessary or redundant
communication, PLEASE recognize that whenever you receive a message from
rmtd asc@e... and you need to respond; 1) decide whether you need to
tell the whole group about it in which case you can simply reply by sending
the message to rmtd asc@egroups.com; or 2) if you only want one person to
know, then send the message directly to the person's e-mail address, rather
than to the entire group.

Your cooperation will assure that none of the group suffers from information
overload.

Safety Day and Upcoming Training

Loss Prevention Coordinators,

By way of a reminder, our Safety (Loss Prevention) Coordinators meeting is
on August 23, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at the Public Service Commission. If you
haven't yet received an agenda, please let us know and we'll make sure that
you get one.

Safety Day has been scheduled for September 13, 2000 at the Capitol Rotunda
and the good news is that Governor Racicot is giving state employees one
hour away from work (paid leave) to view exhibits and to participate in the
events that have been scheduled. This is a wonderful opportunity for state
employees to view exhibits and to learn about first aid/CPR, ergonomics,
defensive driving, AIDS awareness/prevention, industrial hygiene, disaster
and emergency preparedness, electrical safety, hunter and recreational
safety, and fire extinguisher use to mention a few.

In addition, there are many new new exhibits that merit attention such
wildfire prevention, canine search demonstration, school bus safety, eye
care and protection, and aeronautical safety. Attached is a copy of the
letter that Governor Racicot sent to the cabinet and elected officials with
an agenda for Safety Day as well as a preliminary list of exhibits and
sponsors that will be participating. If your agency would like to sponsor an
exhibit, contact Aric Curtiss, Loss Prevention Specialist, before September
5th at (406)444-3486. Since we have limited time in which to promote this
event, WE NEED your assistance to make this year's Safety Day a success.
Please work with your agency head, management team, and safety committes to
make sure that all of your employees have the opportunity to attend.

On another note, beginning September 7, 2000 our loss prevention consultants
will provide Office Ergonomics and Back Injury Prevention training at seven
locations throughout Montana. We have had excellent feedback on these
seminars from many state agencies, however, we would like to see attendance
improve. One of the unfortunate things about our backs is that we don't
think there is anything to prevent until we have a back injury. Back
Injuries account for 40% of all state employee workers' compensation claims
and repetitive strain injuries have become the occupational disease of the
new millenium.

We have attached promotional brochures with dates, times, and locations of
the training for you to use as a distribution and promotional tool to
support and encourage this training. The training is free and open
enrollment on a first come, first serve basis. Please distribute this
information quickly since space may be limited. Please work with your agency
head, managers, and employees to promote this important training. Your
support and assistance in promoting safety training in state government is
appreciated.

Workers' compensation claims are up a bit, and our incurred losses are on
the increase. By attending Safety Day and participating in back injury
prevention and office ergonomics training, state employees will learn safe
behaviors and practices to help reduce costs associated with work injuries.
Please call Aric Curtiss, Loss Prevention Specialist, at (406)444-3486 tif
you have any questions about Safety Day or to schedule training for your
employees. In the event that Aric is unavailable, you may reach me at
(406)444-3687.
